Beverly Hills Schools News

Beverly Vista awarded National Blue Ribbon School

Beverly Vista has been honored as one of the two hundred and ninety-five schools in the nation to have been named in the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools for 2005, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced today. In recognition of the progress these schools have made under No Child Left Behind, each school will receive an award certificate as part of the Blue Ribbon Schools program.

"The achievement gap is closing and that is great news for every student," Spellings said. "These Blue Ribbon Schools are an example of what teachers and students can achieve. For the first time, we are insisting on results and accountability in return for our federal investment in education. In the three-plus years since No Child Left Behind was signed into law, we've learned a new equation: 'Accountability plus high expectations plus resources equals results.'"

Tragedy Strikes Beverly Hills

Vahagn Setian, Passenger in Lane Garrison's SUV Laid to Rest

Funeral services were held yesterday for Vahagn Setian, the 17 year old passenger who died when Fox TV star of "Prison Break" Lane Garrison's 2001 Land Rover hit the curb and rolled over on its side. Two other teens were injured in the crash, one of them critically.

Vahagn a very popular student at Beverly Hills High School touched many of his peers lives as he is remembered as a very loving and caring friend. This is truly realized as one reads the notes and letters written on the sidewalk at the scene of the accident.

Beverly Hills People spoke to a resident who heard the crash and called 911 just as she was getting into bed. Her husband headed to the accident and views the Land Rover on its side. One girl was sitting on the curb and the driver was standing on the other side of the car.

Jesse Coe, another student said, "He was just a fantastic guy. He had so much energy. No matter who you were - if you were someone who was popular or unpopular - he would be friends with you. He didn't care who you were. He made you feel good about yourself."

We at Beverly Hills People ask, It's twelve o'clock. Do you know where you're children are?

Our hearts go out to the Setian family and friends. This tragedy has taken this young boys life, leaving the survivors struggling to find some meaning and understanding of why. God bless you.

120 Room Waldorf Astoria Planned for Beverly Hills
future site of the waldorf astoria

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Hilton Hotels and Beverly Hilton owner Oasis West Realty announced yesterday plans for a 120-room Waldorf-Astoria in Beverly Hills at the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard. The hotel is part of a 500 million dollar revitalization project for the nine acre parcel of Beverly Hills. Four-and-a-half acres have been set aside for gardens and open space in addition to a public art collection. Rooms at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City go for approximately 700 dollars a night.

City approval looks tenuous. Many residents claim the project would create a negative impact on traffic.

"Bringing two legendary hotel brands together in Beverly Hills will create a new legacy of luxury for The Beverly Hilton property," said Beny Alagem, chairman of Oasis West and owner of The Beverly Hilton. In the future the entire property will have a whole new look transforming its urban setting into a garden environment. Together, The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and The Beverly Hilton will create a one-of-a-kind hotel property that is unmatched in its diverse offerings, services and amenities for guests and residents of Beverly Hills."

Interview with the "Governator"
Arnole Schwarzenegger
Paula Parisi and Carl DiOrio from the Hollywood Reporter 01//05/07

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a man of many offices. In addition to his gubernatorial digs in Sacramento, he has a state office in downtown Los Angeles and maintains a civilian sanctuary in Santa Monica. A holdover from his days in filmmaking, it's his most personal work space, filled with art and artifacts and family pictures along with the trappings of state -- all of which he discusses with great relish.

A replica of the Harrier jet from 1994's "True Lies" hangs above a pool table, beneath which lurks the crocodile from 1996's "Eraser." Across the room, there's a heroic bust of Vladimir Lenin. "It was a gift from a Russian weightlifter friend. When the Soviet Union fell, these were the hugest things to get a hold of. I told him how great it was, and he sent another one the next year. So, now I have all the Russian leaders," he laughs. "It reminds me of what worked and what didn't work.

Communism obviously didn't work. These are the winners over here," he says, gesturing to a gallery that includes former presidents Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy. There also is a wall full of trophies for acting and bodybuilding, as well as photos documenting his public and private life.

An etching of an old castle triggers memories of growing up and playing in a real castle in his Austrian homeland. With Christmas tunes jingling in the background, the governor welcomed The Hollywood Reporter's Paula Parisi and Carl DiOrio on Dec. 18 to reflect on his first years in office and look ahead at the term to come.

Celebrity Power Comes to the Rescue of a Beverly Hills Animal Shelter

Facing an uncertain future due to an eminent domain battle. The animal shelter is located next to Beverly's Public Works, but when the city needed to expand, celebrity power mobilized at City Hall.

Mischa Barton took her pooch, named Charlie, to the protest outside City Hall on Tuesday night that attracted fellow actress Amy Smart, Pauley Perrette and Megan Mullally. "I rescued both of my dogs through the Amanda Foundation," said Mullally. "I just hope they get to keep their spot that they're in right now because dogs love it," said Barton. The cottage of Dr. Schipp's Animal Hospital is next to the Public Works facilities, and shares space with the Amanda Foundation.

The foundation is a safehouse for dogs on the streets, from the pound and Hurricane Katrina. "We have a 100 percent adoption rate. We've never had to euthanize a dog, nor will we ever," said adoption coordinator Kate Tickel.

A year ago the city first indicated it wanted to acquire the property for a public works expansion but when the land owner declined to sale for $2 million and the city started talking eminent domain, celebrity supporters were called up. "They want a storage facility instead?" said Smart.

The Beverly Hills City Council was to take up the motion, but put it off. The city manager told NBC4 the city is prepared to offer the shelter a new location on Third Center for a token rent of $1 a year. "The city has every concern for the welfare of the animals. We have concern that Amanda doesn't miss a single day of operation for serving those animals," said Beverly Hills City Manager Rod Wood. The next step is a meeting Thursday.
