No one knows this better than Frédéric Malle creator some of the world's finest women's perfume. Frédéric Malle appeared at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills last week (November 30th, 2006). BeverlyHillsPeople had the distinct opportunity to spend a couple of hours speaking with Mr. Malle. It was a joy to listen to one with such passion and expertise. After all, it's in his blood.
Born in Paris in 1962, Malle, the grandson of Serge Heftler, founder of Dior Perfumes was raised in a family with a fascinating connection to the perfume industry and a deep respect for it's craft and traditions.
Upon completion of studies at the University of New York (NYU), Jean Amic, former Head of the Fragrances and Flavours Division of Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd and Vice-Chairmanship of the Givaudan-Roure Board of Directors recruited him in 1988 to work for Roure Bertrand Dupont where he was taken into the inner sanctum and initiated in the secrets and methods of the craft. It is also where he met and learned from the greatest contemporary perfumers.
In a July 14th, 2006 interview with Tim Manners, Malle, considered one of the industry's more innovative perfumers says he draws inspiration from great artists like Henri Matisse saying, "Matisse used to tell his students, Don't try to be original. Be simple. Be good technically, and if there is something in you it will come out." And quoting Malle on his perfumes, "It is important for a women to wear the
right perfume but it is more important that she wear it well ". This becomes obvious when speaking with one of his customers who said, she loves malle's perfumes. What she loves even more is when people stop her on the street and ask her, "What are you wearing? You smell wonderful."
On creating a new fragrance... He starts with a white canvas and combines and modifies a vast array of flowers, spices and scents reaching a pleasing perfume.
Since 1994, Frédéric Malle, as a consultant to the world of perfume, has worked for clients such as Christian
Lacroix, Chaumet, Hermès International, Mark Birley for Men.
