The Juno express rolls on. Having just passed $160,000,000 in worldwide box office grosses, Juno rolled up some more kudos this past weekend from the independent film community with its Spirit Awards for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.
Ellen Page was visibly overwhelmed with delight as she accepted her award for a brilliant turn as Juno, a young 16 year old Minnesota girl who has gotten knocked up from a first time romp with Paulie Bleeker(Michael Cera). Juno decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption to a wealthy yuppie couple, Mark and Vanessa Lorning (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner) who live in the suburbs, who have been trying for years to have a child of their own with no success. Juno finds the couple while perusing ads in the PennySaver per the suggestion of her best friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby). Juno's dialogue stands out as uniquely clever, witty and to the point.
Although Juno lost out to the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men in the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards the following night, worldwide audiences continue to pack movie houses to view what is the biggest movie sleeper hit since My Big Fat Greek Wedding, another independent film.
